The biggest tradition is with Christmas and starts on Christmas Eve. Traditional Christmas dinners do not include a lot of Italian food that may be foreign to foreigners. That's because Italians observe the kind of symbolic fasting that is actually the same as light dinner. This means that there will be no Italian food that includes typical meat. Instead Italian food will be centered around seafood including snails and frogs. That might sound a little more French than Italian, but this is the right time to experience some very good traditional Italian food that is hard to find outside Italy.

The next day at Christmas food might be a little more familiar. The first dish is very famous Italian food, tortellini. This pasta dish filled with meat is more in line with what most people imagine when thinking of Italian food. After eating dessert consists of one of two types of cakes, either panettone or pandoro. If you are in Milan or spend a holiday with your family from Milan, it will be panettone. This cake like bread takes days to make and is an Italian food that not many people know, even though it is a symbol of Milan. Other traditional cakes are pandoro, sweet bread which is often made to look like a mountain complete with white sugar which gives a snowy finishing touch. Christmas is the perfect time to taste the sweet side of Italian food.

Easter Sunday is another holiday that takes the family to the table. The holiday starts with breakfast. Not too many people think of breakfast when thinking of Italian food, but Easter Sunday starts with a salami and boiled egg party with cakes and pizza all washed with quality wine. That night, chosen Italian food would be a dish that relied on lamb, avoiding other meats. That night will end with wine and cake.

The last important holiday for those who like Italian food is St. John's Day. Joseph. This holiday is to commemorate Saint Joseph saving Sicily from starvation. This holiday is centered on somewhat unknown Italian food, fava beans. It is these beans that save Sicily from starvation. So, while these beans are not native to Italy, there are many Italian food dishes centered on them on St. John's Day celebrations. Joseph. The day is spent giving food to the needy, eating donuts like cakes and enjoying good Italian food.

Anytime is the right time for Italian food, but holidays really make genuine Italian food shine when families gather to celebrate with traditional dishes. Try celebrating a holiday with Italian food and you will be introduced to the side of the cuisine which many don't know exists.
