Alternative Energy Education Method

The best method for educating the younger generation about alternative energy production that I have witnessed is the use of kits, books, and the PicoTurbine Company project. The PicoTurbine company produces these things for the purpose of advancing the cause of renewable energy (alternative) and inviting young people to look into the future and see that the environment that is being seeded now is the environment they will inherit at that time. Like the latter, the great Gerry Ford said, "Everything is more like now than before." If we want to change the world of the future for the better, then it starts here and now with the emergence of "green" energy systems.

Alternative Energy Education Method

One of the core concepts of PicoTurbine can be stated: Tell me, and I will forget. Show me, and I might remember some of them. Involve me, and I will master it. Based on this old, tried and true adage, company-produced kits come with suggestions for activities to make young people in direct learning situations. One suggestion from the company is to show how heat can be generated by wind energy (specifically for companies) through the use of "wire drawing" for heating elements. PicoTurbine has found that people usually regard wind energy as "cold" energy, and are very surprised to see how wind can be used to produce heat at home. Another project suggestion offered by the company is to separate the different groups in the class and then compare their respective wind turbines that they have built. They can see which produce the most or the least electricity; who start with the least wind power needs; and for very young children, which has the most aesthetic appeal.

There is a core curriculum that PicoTurbine thinks for teachers to instill in their students. Renewable alternative energy sources include solar, hydroelectric, geothermal, and biomass in addition to the energy produced by wind. When we use more alternative energy sources, we reduce our nation's dependence on foreign oil supplies, which often come from countries that are not really our "allies". Alternative energy has become cost effective when used against fossil fuels that we rely on today.

PicoTurbine shows that wind farms and solar panels have allowed its makers to enjoy commercial success. In the past two decades, the cost of photovoltaic cells expressed in per watt has increased from almost $ 1000 to only $ 4! Analysts have predicted that in 2015, the cost per watt should only be around $ 1 (in current dollars). Students also need to be taught about the hidden costs of fossil fuels: pollution and environmental degradation. Air pollution from burning fossil fuels has been demonstrated through studies to increase the incidence of asthma attacks, increase the effects of allergies, and even cause cancer. Turning to clean, green energy found in alternative forms will prevent air pollution and help improve the environment.
